History of Clean India
Mahatma Gandhi had foreseen a dream of clean India during his visit to Champaran in 1917, He had brought a lot of social changes there in that small town of Bihar. From shutting old latrine trenches to digging new one, his intent was to make India clean and Swacch. Following his footsteps, a Clean India Mission was started in India by India’s current Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi.
What is Clean India Mission?
The Clean India Mission is a campaign run by the Indian Government to ensure that all public places are cleaned and people keep their surrounding clean. The mission was started on 2nd October 2014 by PM Modi as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, New Delhi. On this day, many functions are also held in various other parts of the country wherein the representatives elaborate the importance of cleaning our surroundings. On this day, all the institutes, companies, organizations keep their staff engaged in cleaning their premises.
Besides, representatives from various ministries along with state government officials take a pledge to follow the cleanliness drive and keep their surroundings clean. The Prime Minister addresses the nation through his radio show ‘Mann Ki Baat’ where he urges people to make Clean India a success by becoming a part of this campaign. He also shares some tips on how we can maintain cleanliness in our country by following certain rules that were taught by Mahatma Gandhi during his lifetime.
The Clean India Mission is an ambitious plan of the government to make India free from open defecation and manual scavenging with a cost estimated to be around Rs 62,009 crore (US$ 9.8 billion).
Why does India Need to be clean?
India needs a cleanliness campaign like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to get rid of dirtiness and filthy surroundings. This is important for the overall development of citizens in terms of health and well-being. Most of India’s population resides in rural areas, and this creates a lot of hygiene problems for citizens. The Clean India mission can help improve the living conditions of these people if implemented properly in rural areas of the country.
