What is Janmashtami?

Janmashtami is an annual Hindu holiday that celebrates the birth of Krishna. The holiday is observed on the eighth day of the dark lunar fortnight in the month of Shraavana of the Hindu calendar. Janmashtami ends nine days later, with a celebration called Rasalila.

Importance of Janamashtami

The festival of Janamashtami is very important to Hindus. It celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna on Earth. People celebrate this holiday with a lot of enthusiasm all over India and Nepal. They prepare flattened rice in the shape of Lord Krishna and decorate it with raisins, nuts, and other dry fruits and cut it to mark the birthday of Lord Krishna.

Celebration of Janamashtami

People celebrate Janamashtmi by dancing and telling stories about Krishna. There are many temples which are adorned with light where people go to pray to Krishna. People decorate the statues of Krishna with clothing and jewelry that they offer. People all over India sing religious songs praising the birth of Lord Krishna on Janmashtami. They fast during the day and break their fast at midnight. Throughout the night, they offer prayers to Lord Krishna by singing bhajans.

Significance of Janamashtami

For Vaishnavites, the festival of Janmashtami is a very important day. They celebrate every year the day that Sri Krishna was born. This day is significant because it shows how Sri Krishna came to earth to help his devotees. It also marks an important chapter in Hindu mythology since it highlights when Sri Krishna returned to Mathura Vrindavan after killing Kansa who murdered eight sons born to his mother. This festival is celebrated all over the world with pomp and show.
