Journey to the end of the earth has been written and narrated by Tishani Doshi who shares her overall experience of visiting Antarctica under a program called ‘Students on Ice’ along with 52 students. let’s look at the brief summary of the chapter.
Summary of Journey to the End of the Earth
Tishani Doshi starts her journey boarding a Russian research vessel namely ‘Akademik Shokalskiy’ from 13.09 degrees north of the equator in Chennai, crosses nine time zones, six checkpoints, three bodies of water, and many ecospheres. Besides, she travels almost for 100 hours by car, air to reach the windiest, coldest and the driest place of this world.
Then she talks about a giant southern super continent Gondwana which existed 650 million years ago with no human trace, with lot of flora and fauna. According to her, it thrived for 500 million years but soon dinosaurs were wiped out and arrived mammals. The landmass got forced to separate and it became a different identity. She calls it a wonderful experience on being around a place which has 90 percent ice of this world. According to her, Antarctica has no earthly sense, trees. billboard etc.
Moreover, she discusses about the impact human has made on this earth. According to her, human has dominated the nature and increased the population so much that it has led to innumerable problems for the inhabitants of the earth. He is the only creature responsible for the emission of Carbon dioxide around the world as well as for the ever-rising temperature on this planet.
In addition to this,she discusses about ‘Students on Ice-A Program’ which was started by a Canadian Geoff Green who, earlier, used to take celebrities to show such place that were hampered by human through his illegal activities but later he decided to replace celebrities with students as they could convey the better messages to their community and society about how glaciers are melting, ice-shelves are collapsing and how much human has deteriorated this earth by his activities.
Besides, she talks about single-celled plants called Phytoplanktons that nourish and sustain the entire ocean’s food chain and use sun’s energy to assimilate carbon and synthesize organic compounds in such a cold weather and most important of processed called Photosynthesis. According to her, such activities of human can affect the activities of phytoplankton and the entire lives of marine animals.
In the end, she shares her experience of walking on an ocean that how their ship got stuck between the peninsula and Tadpole and prevented them to go any further. They are advised to get down by the captain to get the feel of walking on the ocean. She, along with her friends, gets down and walks on a one metre thick ice on 180 metre of living and breathing salt water. On the whole, this whole episode makes a mark in the life of the narrator which makes her believe that Antarctica is the only place to study earth’s past, present and future.
