A Truly Beautiful Mind Summary : This chapter revolves around Albert Einstein & his life. Albert Einstein was born on March 14th, 1879 in Ulm, Germany. When he was two-and-a-half years old, he started talking and repeating every word twice. His mother thought that he was a freak with an abnormal large head. As a child, Einstein loved playing with mechanical toys and when his younger sister was born he enquired about her wheels like a toy would usually have.
When Albert Einstein was six years old, his headmaster said that he was foolish. But instead of being bad at school, he scored good marks in most areas. When he was fifteen years old, he felt uncomfortable with how regimented the school was so he left for good.
Albert’s parents moved to Milan, so Albert stayed with his relatives. He went to school in Switzerland where he learned German. When he was done with school, he took an admission at a university in Zurich. The university atmosphere was more liberal and accepted new ideas and concepts better than his old school did. Besides, Albert liked Physics and Maths so wanted to be a scientist when he grew up.
Albert started working in a patent office in 1902. He would assess other people’s inventions and work on his own ideas. While he was at university, he met Mileva Maric, a fellow student who was very smart. They fell in love and got married in 1903. But their marriage didn’t last long and they divorced in 1919. That same year, he married Elsa, his cousin.
Albert Einstein released a paper called “Special Theory of Relativity” in 1905. This theory said that time and distance are not absolute, and this gave birth to the most famous equation which describes the relationship between mass and energy. Later in 1915, he published his “General Theory of Relativity” which described gravity in a new way. In 1919, a solar eclipse proved that his theory was accurate. Einstein’s work in physics was proclaimed a “scientific revolution” by newspapers. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 for his current work in physics. After he received this award, the press lauded him for all the other awards he received for his scientific theory.
In 1933, the Nazis gained control over Germany. Einstein immigrated to America because he did not want his scientific research to be used for destruction of mankind. In 1938, the discovery of nuclear fission led to a lot of uproar among American physicists. So Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt warning about the dangers if an atomic bomb were used.
In 1945, America developed a secret bomb. America threw bombs on Japan that caused great pain. Einstein was very sad and wrote a letter to the United Nations. He wanted a world government to stop people from being so destructive to each other. In 1955, he died at the age of 76 and is often remembered as both a scientist and someone who saw the future coming before it happened.
