Weathering the Storm in Ersama Summary : This chapter tells us about a young man named Prashant and his real-life-based experience when he got stuck on his friend’s roof for two nights after a storm that hit Orissa massively. That happened on October 27, 1999. At the time of that misadventure, Prashant was at Ersama, one of the small towns of coastal Orissa almost eighteen kilometers away from his village.

A natural disaster happened and it was very bad. A lot of people were hurt and some people died. But there was a brave person who helped others and made sure they were safe. There was a storm with lots of rain that destroyed many homes and killed people, too. Prashant was stranded on the roof of his friend’s house. It was cold and rainy. He spent two nights there. When he woke up, he saw houses destroyed by a storm.

Water flooded the village, but only the cemented houses stayed still. Carcasses of animals and dead bodies floated in every direction. Prashant was worried about his family, so he went to check on them. After the rain stopped, the water started to go away. He found out where they were staying by asking people who knew his uncle’s friends. Then he went to find them at the Red Cross shelter and found his family later there.

Prashant was sad to see people who were affected by a super cyclone. They had no food and only green coconuts from the tree that was uprooted in the storm. So, he decided to volunteer and help survivors by arranging food for them with some elders and other young people like him. He began by organizing a team of young volunteers to clear all the filth and floating carcasses after the storm.

On the fifth day of the natural disaster, a military helicopter dropped some food. The helicopter did not come any further. So, Prashant and his fellow volunteers decided to send children with empty plates on their stomachs in order to get the attention of the helicopter. It worked and after that, the helicopter started dropping basic needs and food parcels from up high in helicopters.

Prashant worked hard after the storm. He gave shelter to orphans. He also convinced women to work with an NGO that had a food-for-work program, and he organized sport events for children.
