Section A – Reading

Passage 1 Solutions

i. Cite a point in evidence, from the text, to suggest that the writer’s post-Jaws fear was not justified.

Answer: There is a statement in the passage which clearly indicates that there are only 2 shark attacks from 1900-1975 which shows that the writer’s post-Jaws fear was not justified.

ii. State any one trait of the writer that is evident from lines 5-10 and provide a reason for your choice.

Answer: Adventurous/Fearless/Courageous. The writer seems adventurous for he was aware of the fact that sharks are dangerous yet he went to swim with them.

iii. People thought the writer was ‘either brave or very stupid’. Why did some people think that he was “very stupid’?

Answer: Some people thought that he was very stupid for he was going to swim with the sharks without a diver’s cage. Moreover, he could be bitten by any shark in the water which could risk his life.

iv. Why does the writer say that people who know sharks intimately tend to be least afraid of them?

Answer: The writer says that people who know sharks intimately tend to be least afraid of them for he had seen them feeding the sharks with fish and steering them gently without being harmed. Moreover, these divers speak lovingly of the sharks.

v. Rewrite the given sentence by replacing the underlined phrase with another one, from lines 10 – 20.

viii. Apex predators serve to keep prey numbers in check. How can we say that tiger sharks are apex predators?

Answer: Tiger sharks are apex predators as they act as a crucial balancing force in ocean ecosystems, constraining the number of sea animals like sea turtle and limit their behaviour by preventing them from overgrazing the sea grass beds which support marine animals in different form.

ix. Analyse why having a large litter is one of the features that empowers tiger sharks to emerge winners if global warming persists.

Answer: Tiger Sharks do not eat anything and love warm water. If the planet and oceans continue to warm, they will be least affected and emerge as winners even if global warming persists whereas other species may disappear.

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer ANY SIX out of the seven questions given below.

i. What does the researcher mean by ‘changing food preferences’?

Answer: The researcher means to say that urban population have shifted themselves from traditional home-cooked meals with ready-to-eat processed food.

ii. Why was this survey on the food consumption of adolescents undertaken?

Answer: The purpose of undertaking this survey on the food consumption of adolescents was to understand the food pattern of urban adolescents and to make recommendation based on the data.

iii. With reference to fig.1, write one conclusion about students’ consumption of energy-dense drinks.

Answer: This figure defines that almost 40% of adolescents drink three or more servings of energy dense beverages whereas a mere 5% said ‘no’ to more than one serving of the beverage.

What do you understand by the term food frequency, as stated in lines 12-13?

Answer: Food frequency refers to the rate of intake of food and beverages (drinks) consumed over a specified period of time. It could even refer to portion size.

Answer: We can conclude that nearly half the respondents (45%) did not consume any servings of fruit in contrast to 95% that had some form of energy dense snack

Answer: According to the survey, Females had more nutritious dietary intake as they consumed more cereals, vegetables and fruits compared to their male counterparts.

Malkangiri : Deputy Commissioner of Malkangiri Mr. V. Singh on Friday felicitated representatives and volunteers of 4Literacy, an NGO working for the education of underprivileged children, for their invaluable support. While handing over appreciation certificates to them during a felicitation ceremony, the DC along with other dignitaries lauded the vanguard role played by them for deprived children in the district. He called them unsung heroes in the battle against illiteracy and said that the district administration would continue to felicitate such personalities. There were many other prominent personalities, educationists, doctors, political leaders present  over there exhorting them to continue to perform such social service with renewed zeal and passion.

Founder of 4Literacy, Mr. Jatin Sachdeva briefly elaborated how their NGO works highlighting the importance of education in one’s life. Besides he demonstrated the functioning of his team and shared images (Clicked with children) with everyone on the screen. Before, winding up, he thanked all and sundry for honouring and motivating them at such a level and assured to work with more energy and enthusiasm.

5. Attempt ANY FIVE of the six questions given below, within 40 words each.

i. A mistaken identity led to a discovery of a new one for the rattrap peddler. How did this impact him? (The Rattrap)

Answer: Rattrap Seller had a hard time. He could hardly arrange two square meal to keep his body and soul together despite plodding for long hours selling rattraps. When he was mistaken as an old captain, he thought of taking undue advantage of ironmaster and his daughter’s leniency. But, seeing the love and respect being showered on him by Edla Willmanson, he decided to give up thieveries and breaking the faith of people. In short, love, care and affection shown to him by Edla changed his life altogether.

ii. As the host of a talk show, introduce Rajkumar Shukla to the audience by stating any two of his defining qualities. (Indigo)

Meet Rajkumar Shukla, the man who played a pivotal in the Champaran Movement. He ……

Answer: He is resolute, optimistic and courageous. It would not be unfair to say that he is the one who brought an optimistic transition to people of Champaran along with Gandhi Ji. Had he not been to Gandhi, history would not have taken the turn and our country would have been bearing the atrocities of the Britishers. He is one of the first revolutionaries of India. Let’s give it up for one and only Mr. Rajkumar Shukla.

iii. Adrienne Rich chose to express her silent revolt through her poem, Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers, just as Aunt Jennifer did with her embroidery. Explain. 

Answer: Aunt Jennifer is a universal figure who represents the pathetic condition of women across the world. She is one of the many women who still believes ‘Silence is the best answer to someone who doesn’t value your words.’ Therefore, she decides to elaborate her pain and desires through her embroidered tigers rather than revolting it against her husband who exploits her despite being talented. She creates tigers on the panel with an aspiration to become like them but can’t even after wishing. Had she wanted, she could have raised her voice against the ordeals but she found it futile and useless.

iv. Rationalize why Keats uses the metaphor ‘an endless fountain of immortal drink’ in his poem, A Thing of Beauty?

Answer: Keats was a true nature lover. In ‘A Thing of Beauty’ he compares natural beauty to an endless fountain which produces never-ending drink. According to him, natural thigs, whom he calls beautiful things, are endless and they provide eternal joy forever. There is no substitute of nature and  natural things and no one can replace them. 

v. How do you think Derry’s mother contributes to his sense of alienation and isolation? (On the Face of It)

Answer: Derry has a complex that he is different from others due to his half-burnt face. He thinks no one likes him therefore he loves being alone and isolated. On the other hand, Derry’s mother contributes to his sense of alienation and isolation for she forbids him to stay with Mr. Lamb, a man who encourages him to face the obstacles of his life. She thinks Mr. Lamb is not a good man to be lived with. She is very much possessive and concerned about her only son. Her extra care leaves him more isolated and alienated.

vi. Validate John Updike’s open-ended title, Should Wizard Hit Mommy?

Answer: The title of Should Wizard Hit Mommy is absolutely validated. It is an open-ended title which puts up a question from its readers whether it is right for wizard to hit mommy or not. The writer of this chapter wants to know the perspective of the readers whether they support little inquisitive four-year-old child who advocates Wizard’s hitting the mother or a mature father who does not want the mother to be hit back. So the title Should Wizard Hit Mommy is apt for this chapter.

6. Answer ANY TWO of the following in about 120-150 words each.

  1. How does Keats’ poem, A Thing of Beauty appeal richly to the senses, stimulating the reader’s inner sight as well as the sense of touch and smell? Write your answer in about 120-150 words.

Answer: A Thing of Beauty is an excerpt taken from Endymion by John Keats. This poem is beautiful composition of him wherein he talks about the importance of beautiful things around us. He sheds light on how beauty changes the mood of the people, removes sadness from their life and creates an aura of optimism around them. Undoubtedly, the poem appeals highly to the senses, stimulates the reader’s inner sight and the sense of touch and smell. John Keats highlights the importance of trees, the sun, the moon, daffodils, clear rills, mid forest brakes and mighty dead which touches our soul and stimulates us to do good to others. Having read the poem, the reader finds everything positive around him and looks at the things differently(positively).

  1. Colin Dexter, the author of Evans Tries an O-level employs the red herring technique of intentionally misleading readers by placing false clues to keep the plot enigmatic. Substantiate with reference to text, in about 120-150 words.

Answer: Red herring technique is usually used in stories. The author uses a side character to distract the reader from the main characters, or someone might respond with unrelated information so they do not have to answer your question. The same happens in the chapter Evans Tries an O-level wherein the author keeps on distracting the readers by presenting the fake clues to make the plot interesting. From Evans’s German teacher to the invigilator, characters are continuously added therefore the readers gets distracted from the main plot and fails to figure out who managed to escape and how. The moment reader tries to understand what happened, another character comes up in front of him. The employment of this red herring technique makes Evans Tries an O-level more thrilling and enigmatic. 

  1. Biographies include features of non-fiction texts – factual information and different text structures such as description, sequence, comparison, cause and effect, or problem and solution. Examine Indigo in the light of this statement, in about 120-150 words.

Answer : Indigo is a short biography of Mahatma Gandhi which highlights his contribution to make India free from the Landlord system which prevailed then and the atrocities of Britishers who used to maltreat people and deprive them of their rights. This excerpt includes factual information of what had exactly happened with Gandhi Ji, what mental trauma he underwent when refused to fetch water from the well, how he was discriminated and treated as untouchable and an outsider. Gandhi’s resilience, perseverance and patience kneeled everyone whosoever was against human rights. Ultimately, his efforts brought laurels and India moved to the path of development. It was the effect of his efforts that helped Indians learn the lesson of self-reliance.
