Conditional Sentences in English/How to make Conditional sentences in English

Basically, there are three types of conditional Sentences.

  1. Open Condition
  2. Improbable or Unreal Condition
  3. Impossible Condition

Let’s have a look at them one by one.

Open Condition

Open condition is used to express Scientific and General Truth. It consists of two clauses i.e an if clause and a main clause. Always remember that, in open condition, we use VERB’s 1st Form with if clause and will + V1 in the main clause.

For example.

If you walk daily, you will stay fit throughout your life. (General Truth)

If we eat fast food daily, we will gain weight. (General Truth)

Improbable Condition or Unreal Condition

Improbable or Unreal condition is used to express the actions which we are not sure about. It consists of two clauses i.e an if clause and a main clause. Always remember that, in improbable condition, we use VERB’s 2nd Form with if clause and would + V1 in the main clause.

For Example:

If India won the match, Sachin would throw a party. (Unreal Situation)

If she succeeded in her life, I would become your slave.

Impossible Condition

Impossible condition is used to express the actions which we are neither  possible in the present nor were possible in the past . It consists of two clauses i.e an if clause and a main clause. Always remember that, in impossible condition, we use had + V3 with if clause and would +  have +V3 in the main clause. (in case of an action)

For Example:

If You had worked hard, you would have succeeded.

If she had not listened to me, she would have failed in her exams.

But if you compare yourself with anyone, you should use were in If clause and would have + V3 in the main clause.

For Example:

If I were the Prime Minister, I would have eradicated poverty from our country.

If She were not my sister, I would have scolded her.
